"In de Ban van de Ring" (3 Volumes) represents the very first foreign translation of "The Lord of The Rings," published in the Netherlands just a year after the English editions. This nearly fine set comprises the First Dutch edition, all First prints, published by Uitgeverij Het Spectrum, Utrecht/Antwerpen, in 1956-1957. The first Dutch edition had a print run of only 3000 copies, making it even rarer than the first UK edition. Unlike the latter, the Dutch edition includes two maps instead of three: a removable map in the first part and a fold-out map in the last. On the dust jacket of ‘De Reisgenoten’ ['The Fellowship of the Ring’], Tolkien's name is mistakenly listed as J.J.R. Tolkien instead of J.R.R. Tolkien.

A near fine set with minor bumped spine ends and a few spots on the bookends, not affecting the pages. Binding is firm and the endpapers are clean. No inscriptions, names, stamps, or other flaws. The brown covers with red print on the spines and gold lettering are in very good condition, with only very minor wear on the red print of the third part. Both maps are in near-fine condition. The set comes with excellent facsimile dust jackets, now protected by removable Brodart Archival Covers. A valuable addition to any Tolkien collection..
